Description

"The purpose of the study was to find out if full-inclusion programs can meet the social development needs of children with Down syndrome. The study was conducted using a semistructured interview format with parent, teacher, and resource teacher, as well as direct observation utilizing the social interaction rubric and descriptions of social interaction behaviors as a guide. In addition, this researcher took field notes on unique observations, which expanded upon the pre-set rubric. The data was analyzed according to potential social interaction themes. The participants included one male student with Down syndrome in a full inclusion, fifth grade classroom, one general education teacher, and one resource teacher. Since the study was a small sample, the results may not generalize to other students with Down syndrome or other general disabilities. After conducting the study, this participant's social development needs were being met and he displayed more appropriate behaviors." -- Abstract, p. 1.
