Despite quadruple heart bypass surgery and other medical issues, 64 year-old Australian Michael Thornton has on his bucket list: 'No.7 Walk the Camino' - an 800 km pilgrimage across Spain. Deciding there's no time like now he drops work and hops to it. Arriving in Saint Jean Pied de Port in France, he registers at the Pilgrims' Office, then with three other pilgrims is escorted by a burly aubergiste (who clearly won't take no for an answer) to his albergue. The four pilgrims are bundled into the last remaining dormitory. So begins Michael's 27-day trek from France to Santiago de Compostela on the far side of Spain - the world's third best-known pilgrimage after roads to Jerusalem and Rome. More than 100,000 people undertake the Spanish pilgrimage each year. Plagued by self-doubt, Michael worries about having to walk 25 kms per day for a month. He tells of becoming lost in the dark and being followed by someone closely resembling the Apostle Saint James to whom the Camino is dedicated and whose remains lie in the Santiago Cathedral. Then there re is 28 year-old Robbert from Holland ("two 'b's because my mother stutters"), with whom Michael walks into Estella - and from whom he receives a lecture on attitude! At Carrion de Los Condes, Michael is asked to sing a solo at Mass in a church full of locals and fellow pilgrims. And he's not Catholic! Unlike other authors on the Camino, Michael itemizes for readers all the costs of undertaking his pilgrimage, including his backpack and everything in it. In his nightly blogs, He tells many funny stories which elicit mixed reactions. Asks a pilgrim in the town square at Logrono, "Everyone is reading your blogs; what do I need to do to get a mention?" Michael replies, "Have you ever stolen anything?" Finally at Santiago Michael receives his treasured Compostela certificate, which says that he walked The Strange Road in memory of his son, Jamie, who died aged 28 in 2011.
