It is in this volume that Nicholas grows to young manhood and we see the first glimpses of what will become the St. Nicholas Legend, which will in turn develop into the familiar figure of Santa Claus. Our Santa is only suggested here--a few furtive Christmas Eve visits, a few secretly hidden gifts. It is not the children of the world who are the blessed recipients on these occasions, but three very fortunate young women whom you have met before in the previous book. According to the old tales, they were the very first young persons to receive gifts from St. Nicholas. And of course we know they were not the last--far from it!Nicholas' teen years were spent in a monastery. In my early twenties I had the privilege of spending a week in a monastery as a guest. I was made welcome by the holy brothers and they permitted me to observe and share in their daily experiences. One day, for example, was a day of silence on which none of them could speak. I was not under their vow of silence, but of course I honored their obligation and did not attempt to engage in conversation (except with two who were permitted to speak to me). Other days they showed me their chores and routines. They had stables for the cows and horses, and did farm work in the nearby pasture lands. They produced most of the food that they set on their own table, including the milk, cheese, and eggs. What impressed me the most was the fact that these holy brothers were just the same as any other people; they only lived in a different way. Of course, they didn't have wives or families, but together they formed a family of brothers and were very much in harmony with one another. It was a peaceful respite and very spiritually refreshing. The scenes set in the monastery in this book are based on my recollections of that memorable week.In Desires of Childhood we saw Nicholas trying to imitate his friend Petrus and to be as like him as possible. In Yearnings of Youth we see Petrus attempting to conform to Nicholas' way of life. Each boy tries hard to fit into the other's world. This is a human yearning--to be just like those around us. But God calls us to be ourselves, the way He designed us. When we accept His design and plan for us, then we walk into true satisfaction and fulfillment. One person may choose to marry, while another may choose a different path. This doesn't mean that one way is right and the other is wrong. Those holy brothers who hosted me knew that they were called to serve in their special capacity, while I realized during my restful sojourn that I was not cut out for a monastic life, and eventually God called me to a very different career in teaching and in writing. In Proverbs 16:9 we read, "A man's mind plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps." (RSV) Nicholas and his friend both learn this lesson, that God has a different plan for each. But the journey to that understanding is what this story is about--finding out God's plan for our individual lives. In the process of this discovery, we learn more and more about ourselves. Each step takes us nearer to becoming who we are...just as our Nicholas will one day take his place as a giftbringer to the world
