Jerak was raised to fear and respect the sky-gods ever since he was a small child. As he grew up in the Darby clan he started to questions the teachings of his people's religious beliefs and the blind faith that his own father seemed to place in them. When a hunting trip leads him into the ruins of the old ones' city, Jerak's doubt about their religion intensifies and he begins to search the ancient scriptures for answers. When the gods suddenly reappear and request forty volunteers to compete for the opportunity to leave New Eden with them; he decides to sign up hoping to learn the truth about them. That decision will change his life forever. Taley grew up in the Tooth clan to become an excellent bison huntress along with her sister Teena. Taley is a free spirit who becomes restless and bored with her life. When the gods reappear to her father, Chieftain Fighting Hawk and request participants for the games, Taley and Teena both sign up. Taley hopes to find something more than what life in the Tooth clan has to offer; she also hopes to reunite with the mother who left with the gods fifteen years prior. The two sisters along with Jerak will find themselves facing incredible perils as they are taken into the heavens and onto the dangerous world that is Tenua. Their only hope of survival will lie in the kindness of a female god named SSerl, and of a supreme being who reveals himself to be the one true God.
