The great Spanish artist, Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), surpass the limits of genius with his paintings and engravings. This book shows all the prints or drawings of the series Disasters of War: 82 high quality prints. These etchings were made by Goya from1810 to 1815. With the printed images Goya exposes the hunger, anguish, savagery and death that generated the Spanish War of Independence (1808-1814). Also, the book has 33 prints of the series Bullfighting, Published in 1816, these drawings reflected the different expressions of bullfighting, the triumph of the best bullfighters, in addition to the mishaps and misfortunes that occurred during the fight. The etchings are characterized by their beauty and quality. Each of these 115 engravings has a brief description of the technique used for its elaboration, the title and the range of years in which it was created. Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes Goya was a very talented painter. His paintings and engravings are famous, all of them of a patent realism: he never tried to embellish the portraits of the aristocrats or the actions of the characters in their engravings.Francisco de Goya was born in Fuendetodos, Spain, on March 30, 1746. His father was a gilder of Basque origin, Don José Goya, and a noble woman named Gracia Lucientes, both of medium social status.In the year of 1770, he began his trip to Italy, an essential country for those who, like him, sought to improve their artistic skills. In cities like Rome, Venice and Milan, he studied the art by Rafael, Rubens and Reni. Undoubtedly the painter took advantage of his stay, since the study of those masterpieces gave a great boost to his strokes. After a year he returned to Zaragoza, in his native Spain.Sometime later, in 1773, the painter married Josefa Bayeu, sister of his protectors, and with whom he would have six children. At the end of 1775 he was called to the Spanish court to paint tapestry boards. The best-known works of that period are: The Snowfall, The Injured Bricklayer and The Blind Chicken, among others. For twelve years he performed these tasks, until an accident caused him to renounce such activity. Goya deafened due to a strange disease. In the year 1824, and for political reasons, Goya announced his retirement from the court and underwent a self-exile in which he accompanied his friends, who were forced into leave the country. His new residence was Bordeaux, a port city in the southwest of France. Goya would eventually suffer health problems due to his advanced age, for such reasons, some relatives traveled to visit him, including his grandson and daughter-in-law. On March 28, 1828 his health condition worsened due to a fall down the stairs.The great Spanish painter had to stay in bed and there was no possible recovery. Francisco de Goya y Lucientes died on April 16, 1828 surrounded by friends and family in that French exile.
