A poor, lost science fiction writer has washed up on the shore of a South American country without a treaty of extradition with the United States. He is troubled by a hallucination apparently born from the detritus of his life's work, the accumulated corpus of the science fiction dating back to Verne and Wells. This "Spacemen," as he calls him, the descendant of Buck Rogers, John Carter, and Kimball Kinnison, continually torments him with what might have been. When a mysterious event transports the writer to the Spaceman's planet, a wild place swarming with thieves and barbarians and advanced totalitarian technocracies, where he must survive myriad dangers from man and beast to reach the Island of Xamt and climb an enchanted tower that protects a powerful artifact. As his mind-or pen-wanders, he sublimates his own life into that of an historical 19th century dandy who declared himself king of a tiny island in the Atlantic Ocean, and into several figures of a parallel universe where science fiction becomes the dominant form of literature in the twentieth century, with all the implications that holds for the course of world events. Finally he must return to confront everything he was running from, including, most especially, himself.
