Some of Gypsy Vision is based on a fictionalized version of several people's lives as told to or experienced by the author. The names, times, and places have been changed and combined to create this story.Char Kravitz, a senior in college, goes to Miami Beach, Florida, during spring break. On the bus trip she meets Leah, who becomes her lifelong friend. A Gypsy reads both girls palms while they are at the beach and foretells Char's future.Shortly after Char returns home from Florida, she meets her future husband Phillip Grant. It is "love at first sight," and they become engaged after only three days. Six months later they are married and eventually have two sons, all of which the Gypsy predicted. The Grants have a wonderful marriage with an interesting life. After thirty-five years of marriage Phil, a recovered alcoholic and a very successful famous criminal lawyer, dies suddenly on a golf course. Char undergoes therapy and relocates to Boca Raton, Florida, where she has an affair and two more husbands, Fred and Max.Char's very odd father, Harry Kravitz, lived in a forest during World War II, when he was a child. After the war ended, he was raised in America by distant unloving relatives. A number of family members with interesting experiences from World War II are introduced. Phil's uncle, a Jewish spy, who in an effort to free his parents, poses as a Nazi officer to gain entry into a concentration camp; Char's aunt, a sixteen- year- old female survivor marries a man she does not know; and Char's third husband Max returns to his family's farm in Poland to search for hidden family treasures. He too has an unusual story of how his family got out of Poland before the war.Char's life changes drastically when she marries her elderly husband Max, and she develops early onset Alzheimer's disease. The story has a dramatic surprise ending.
