Description

H. Stanley RedgroveCollectionALCHEMY:ANCIENT AND MODERN,The theory of the origin of Alchemy put forward in Chapter I has led to considerable discussion; but whilst this theory has met with general acceptance, some of its earlier critics took it as implying far more than is actually the case. As a result of further research my conviction of its truth has become more fully confirmed, and in my recent work entitled Bygone Beliefs (Rider, 1920), under the title of "The Quest of the Philosopher's Stone," I have found it possible to adduce further evidence in this connection.BYGONE BELIEFS,THESE Excursions in the Byways of Thought were undertaken at different times and on different occasions; consequently, the reader may be able to detect in them inequalities of treatment. He may feel that I have lingered too long in some byways and hurried too rapidly through others, taking, as it were, but a general view of the road in the latter case, whilst examining everything that could be seen in the former with, perhaps, undue care. THE MAGIC OF EXPERIENCE.To that large class of thoughtful enquirers who have not made a special study of philosophy, the accompanying volume-to which the author has asked me to write a few words of Introduction, will be found a useful and lucid interpretation of the facts of experience in the light of a sane idealism. The first concept we form of reality is that derived from our sense-impressions, and the world around us is regarded as a real and permanent existence independent of mind.
