Hanserd Knollys (1598-1691) was one of the first English Baptist preachers coming out of the non-conformist movement in England of the 17th century. Like other non-conformists, Knollys suffered greatly for declaring himself independent of the established church. Under the reign of Charles I., he was brought before a committee of parliament twice, but on each occasion was absolved from blame and left unmolested. On January 17, 1649, parliament gave an official commission to him to preach. Between 1645 and the Restoration in 1660, Knollys met with no interference by the government. He even held some offices for profit under Cromwell's Protectorate. However, with the disorder and pandemonium that came with the Restoration of the monarchy, he was incarcerated in Newgate Prison on suspicion, and held for four months until the act of grace on the king's coronation liberated him in April of 1661. He died at an advanced age, having outlived his wife and son. He is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the London Confession of Faith of 1689, along with William Kiffin William Collins, and Benjamin Keach. This is the story of his life, told by James Culross, M.A., D.D. Of the book, a contemporary of Culross wrote, "This little book has great literary excellence. Dr. Culross has taken no ordinary trouble in his collection of material. He understands how to arrange in felicitous style, and so to tell the story to make it eminently attractive and useful to his readers."
