This book is written, not for academics, but for teachers, parents, students; for health, social care and community workers; for businesses and employers; for everyone interested in the well-being of children, families and the community. It presents a vision of an educational system integrated into the community, where the focus is the well-being of all children, families and the community; where self-esteem and confidence, a sense of belonging and being valued, a joy in helping others, the power of collaboration with others, is valued equally with academic excellence. The book is written mainly as conversations between a teacher, school kitchen manager and a parent who share a vision and proceed to implement the vision within their primary school; bringing together teachers, parents, children and local businesses; progressively persuading the school principal and Academy Trust executive to their thinking. While the book is a work of fiction, many of the initiatives like the school garden and working with farms and local producers have already been taken up by a number of primary schools. In fact, the 'menu' contest described in the first chapter is based on a newspaper article describing such a contest in a Devon primary school. The purpose of the book is to encourage debate and discussion around the kitchen table, in school staff meetings, in Council meetings, in Boardrooms. There are alternative options. And maybe the lack of public accountability of our Academy Trust system can be turned to advantage; teachers, parents, students and the community can bring about change from the bottom up. The choice is ours. I have added to the book a set of questions intended to provoke thinking outside the box. There are no right or wrong answers. The reader may choose to go to the questions before reading the book, and then possibly review their answers after reading the book. Blank pages are there to encourage the reader to ask their own questions.
