UAM (Urban Air Mobility) is the use of small, highly automated aircraft for safe, efficient, sustainable, affordable aviation transportation of passengers or cargo within urban and suburban areas. Due to the variety of use cases of UAM, such as an emergency response (air ambulance, emergency supply delivery, organ transport, search and rescue operations), goods delivery (particularly in remote areas), etc., it has recently attracted a lot of research institutions. UAM being still in the development phase has financial, technical, and operational challenges. This research focuses on the automation aspect of the UAM and this thesis presents framework development (from scratch) for both simulation and the physical flight experiments including the hardware and the software used to build the framework followed by the complete step-by-step integration of hardware in the loop (HITL) to the simulation environment. In addition to that a detailed comparison of HITL with software in the loop (SITL) based on the response quality of flight controller (FC) and realism has been presented. Testdata collection from human in the loop (HIL) and HITL integrated simulation environment system is presented and based on the sensor latency as well as data latency the best frame per second (FPS) rate is decided that would maintain the balance between the available resources (memory space, GPU, CPU, and the realism of the simulation environment to collect the best quality data from the sensors (GPS, magnetometer, barometer, camera) that can be used to train the digital twin of human pilot behavior.
