Health promotion paraprofessionals provide a critical service in community health networks. The purpose of this study is to provide insight into the role definitions of Alaska's Community Wellness Advocates (CWAs). Due to the broad variety of roles embodied by health promotion paraprofessionals, the role is ambiguously defined and may be misinterpreted by both consumers and other health workers. This study provides insight into the phenomenon of role definition in Alaska's CWAs through qualitative interviews with graduates of the CWA program. Graduates of the CWA program overwhelmingly reported that the program was a positive experience that enhanced their personal and professional development. Key themes emerging from the data included the need for education of consumers and other health workers regarding the role of health promoters and the importance of well-defined job scopes. Implications for public health practice center around the inclusion of self-promotion techniques and consumer and health worker educational campaigns to better support these important health workers.
