Short stories by a great Minnesota author. These funny, quirky, and sometimes gritty stories invoke a sometimes starkly realistic Minnesota landscape, as well as glimpses of hilarious, but poor childhoods spent roaming this land of verdant hills and blue lakes. Lots of powerful, interesting, funny and just fun stories. When I was a child, our town had five hundred inhabitants, give or take. There was a blacksmith and a whirring, dusty feed mill adjacent to the railroad tracks. The train still ran on those tracks. There were several barber shops, two hardware stores, and a car dealer. There had been a movie theater. There was a bank, a good baseball field, no traffic lights, and one policeman. A lot happened, but not very much of importance happened. It is difficult now, considering is suffused with so much communication, to explain just how insulated from the rest of the world we were. We did not think too much of outsiders. If we thought of them at all, we thought of people from the next town over as being strange. The big city to the northeast was another planet. In our innocence, we ached for change. We lived by a lake, and the lake was important, but it was not the center of attention. It was a lake of summer cabins and summer people, and fishing farmers with cane poles. There were small ma and pa resorts. Mostly, we children were free. In large part, there weren't the hovering parents of today. When we were out of school and away from chores, we were free to roam our world, the lake shore and the farms around. That time that is gone. But here are a few stories mostly derived from that time period. They are written with humor and without much nostalgia. They are stories written with a light touch, but they were not written lightly. I hope you enjoy one or two of them.
