The book which I have titled Helen represents myriad "patches" from my memory bank (and those of many others), which have had lasting aesthetic value for me. Perhaps some will agree and others may not. What is important is the fact that Helen, my mother, mentor, and teacher, left memorable impressions on most, if not all, of the people she encountered. In the book Helen, reference is often made to the nine siblings and how they figured into the lives and rearing practices of Felix and Helen Lewis. Without reference to divine intervention, the lives of the nine children, however, are intricately interwoven into the lives and religious prowess of their parents who became two divinely inspired bishops in the church organization founded in 1903 by Felix's mother and mentor, Mary Lena Lewis Tate. The family instead prefers the appellation simply "blessed." The work at hand is the result of the collaboration of nine siblings: Helen Rosa (our sister from Helen's first marriage to Benjamin Henry Matchett who died when Helen Rosa was only five years old), Hiawatha Curtis, Kiwanis Velma, Walter Raleigh, Meharry Hubbard, Mary Louise, Luke David, Gloria Alpha Omega, and Marguerite Edythe Bess.
