Description

The fate of the Henry family pivots around the textile mill, providing an enduring thread spanning a century. They live through turbulent, ever changing times, interspersed by war, technological revolution, and social, economic, and political change.Abe Henry and his twin brothers William and Harry build a prosperous textile business and the family play their part fighting in two World Wars. Their successors, Richard, Martha, George, and David Henry emerge as major influences on the business. Competition bites hard and the company must diversify and seek business abroad. When Richard Henry travels overseas on business he finds his first love, Jo, a wealthy American on holiday in Italy. Later in his life, following Jo's death, he meets Francesca, an ICI executive in Hong Kong. They are both strong women and each in-turn have an important influence on the mill's fortunes. When the Textile Industry becomes global, Henry's seize the opportunity to invest abroad and profit once again, this time from China's industrial revolution. The joint venture in China proves to be a vital element in the Company's survival before a new generation take control of the mill's destiny as directors retire, suffer from ill health, or die. When Jo dies of heart failure, she leaves Richard her fortune and later, as the mill's fortunes change Richard rescues the company from the receiver by settling its debts, thus ensuring its survival moving into the modern era. Four generations of Henry's profit from the business and struggle with it in turn, reflecting the boom and bust of the economic cycle. When Richard dies, Francesca becomes extremely wealthy and helps David Henry to run the business and develops sales abroad. She meets her future partner, Charlie, a retired RAF pilot and they begin a new life together in Malta.Other family members excel in different fields, John Henry as a professional cricketer, Ruth as a racehorse trainer and Ben as an auctioneer and hotel owner.During a further slump the mill is forced to close, but later a twist emerges as the economics of producing textiles in China turns full circle. The mill begins production once again with the next generation of Henry's at the helm, alongside their Chinese partner.
