We have chosen 10 key themes:* The Infinite Economy* The Human Robot* The Ethic of Alterity* Barbaric Modernism* Intelligent Materials* Spiritual Reality* The Future of History* The Ecology of the Dark Side* Nonsense Art* The End of DeathIt is a patchwork, and as such, this book can be enjoyed in bits and pieces and in no particular order. We have always wanted to imagine and liberate new horizons. The most stunning of Man's adventures are the deeds of heroes who knew they had to want their future. The capacity to anticipate is the key to success. There is a deep correlation between the capacity to think of time and space on an enormous scale and the actual fulfillment of an ambitious destiny.People who succeed in transforming their environment are those capable of em-bracing interests that cover a vast space, those who can propel themselves into the distant future. Utopia I am the future that I invent. In this phrase, modernism turns into post-modernism. As in the Renaissance, an era which invented perspective, we are again in the midst of inventing a new prospec-tive insight. To propel oneself into a desired future is to measure one's context, to release one's talents and to affirm one's uniqueness. Each person, in inventing his or her future, invents a personal field of reality and thereby builds an individual universe. Man is traditionally seen as a product of the universe, modernism has sanctioned his understanding of this universe. We are now invited to invent the universe. There are numerous ways to invent one's future. Research in this field has become increasingly abundant. One can design scenarios by targeting the key factors that define the principle variables and thus make quasi mathematical models. One can play with these variables to find heterogeneous scenarios: identification of variables, then construction and comparison of the models with those that happen in reality. We now have a method that attempts to be scientific. This approach of variables and model creating, which has been particularly defended and developed in France, has often been associated with the theme of "prospective" study of the future. It is deductive. On the other hand, a method has developed in the United States known as "futurology." This view is a bit more heuristic. It consists of cross-referencing incoming information from many different disciplines and underlining emerging trends.Between these two, there are intermediary strategies, for example, interviewing numerous experts on a given subject and then measuring the points of conver-gence and divergence.Over the last several years, we have begun to explore the usefulness of these dif-ferent lines of attack. This book is the result of that work. We do not support one school of thought or another. We think all these methodologies have their limits and their benefits. The prospective approach is useful for understanding in a precise manner the dif-ferent scenarios of unlimited subsystems. Futurology helps us weave a strong global fabric, which in turn allows us to anticipate the effects of structural and transversal rupture. The analysis of convergence and divergence of the work of experts shows how we can trick ourselves into adhering to an overly evident consensus: one isolated ex-pert could be right, even in opposition to all others. My experience has shown me that besides having the capacity to assemble data and make sense of it, intuition, in an irrational dimension, remains an essential factor to understanding the future. The most striking descriptions of the future come from those who spread the wings of their imagination like Jules Verne or Leonardo da Vinci.
