Born in the USA in 1925, Hugh Weiss has lived and worked in Paris since 1948. Considered by many to be involved in the "Figuration narrative" movement in France, his work, however, is more dream-like, resolutely individualistic and completely unclassifiable. Weiss refuses current artistic trends and persistently invents his own tragi-comic imagery which alludes to the strangeness of the world; unforeseen meetings during never ending voyages, traveling through life in an armchair, living as a mustached elephant or an ardent swimmer. The color of his paintings seems bright, but sudden unexpected stridencies and discords reveal an underlying irony. His artistic adventure, from the early forties to the present day, is illustrated by 230 reproductions.
