The events in this trilogy capture the narration of five families living in the unstable years of WWII and post Nazi-regime in Germany. In Volume 1 we meet Wolfgang and his wife Luisa at the outbreak of WW II when they decide to flee Poland to move to Germany. Luisa, a catholic, is devastated that her God can allow a war to happen and seeks refuge in the arms of her supportive Jewish husband. Out of this their third son Arnold, to which Wolfgang builds a special bond, is born. Sadly, due to fierce Holocaust activities in Germany, Luisa and Wolfgang decide to separate for safety reasons. We meet Rose and later Hermann with their two children, as well as Rose's sister Kristina, previously a widow but now married to Jorge, who has had to go to war. Kristina is bringing up their twins Sebastian and Vickie. Her other three children, Albert, Paul and Patrizia, from her first marriage to Paul are living on a Uckermark farm with Rose and Kristina's brother Frederick. The death of Kristina's second husband Jorge in Warsaw at the closing of WW II leaves her stricken, yet fate sees her re-united with her childhood sweetheart Wolfgang, while he is still separated from his wife Luisa. We are also introduced to Luisa's cousin, Helen and her husband Paul, who is an active Gestapo Officer. We meet Wolfgang's boss Karl, later to become Wolfgang's best friend. Karl, who is a widower meets and marries Sabina at the end of WW II. He also manages a leather factory that is partly managed by the Gestapo. Last but not least we meet Franz Berger and his family, neighbors of Rose and Kristina. Franz is also involved in Gestapo affairs whilst secretly and actively supporting the resistance movement. When - two years before end of WWII - Wolfgang happens to run into Kristina, his childhood sweetheart, Kristina and Rose invite him to stay in their garden house and introduce him to Franz. Karl, Wolfgang and Franz meet regularly to exchange information, all hidden behind the curtain of political chaos. During this time Rose happens to meet Hermann, a Black Market tradesman; they fall in love and eventually get married. Herrmann soon joins the meetings with Franz, Karl and Wolfgang. Kristina's husband Jorge is killed in Warsaw and Wolfgang finds himself supporting Kristina in her time of need. Less than one year later, Kristina's youngest daughter, Vickie, twin sister to Sebastian, dies of Typhoid. Kristina is grief stricken and Wolfgang vows to always be there for her. The childhood sweethearts fall deeply in love.
