"Everyone who came into contact with Wells Sawyer were attracted to him for his lightness of spirit, affable nature, whit and stories. As a struggling painter, his charm and talents brought him into friendship with some of the most prominent figures in his time. Chief among these was Frank Vanderlip, who would go on to be president of the Bank of New York and the head of the first Federal Reserve Bank. Vanderlip as long as he lived was Well’s patron. Wells was a late bloomer, owing to his simple beginning as the eldest son of Iowa homesteaders in the 1860s. After his mother took him East to the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, Wells was determined to be a famous artist. By the time he established himself, the Impressionist movement was over and modern art and abstraction were the standard. Wells a romantic, would have none of it and until his death in 1960, he painted landscapes in the impressionist style on location. To Wells, nothing was more grand than the beauty of nature. Destiny took Wells all over the world, and as a result he left behind a wealth of superb landscape paintings from his travels. He also left behind an heir apparent his artist daughter, a renown American painter in her own right Helen Sawyer. Helen, and her famous painter-husband Jerry Farnsworth along with Wells came together in the end in Florida during World War II, the very place where the elder Sawyer had fallen in love with anthropology, and because of his talents saved the record of the Calusa in paint for generations to come."--Amazon
