Description

Why do women from the Northern Triangle countries of Central America risk their lives along with their children's, traversing through the treacherous, dangerous Mexican corridor, full of chaos and not knowing if they will live another day, if delinquents will steal their last peso, hurt them, or kill them? Indeed, they take the gamble rather than risk the consequences in their home country.Few people in our country have an adequate understanding of the plight of the Central American migrants, specifically, why thousands have sought to cross the U.S./México border seeking to start a new life, if not as legal residents, then, as undocumented residents. Approximately 51,000 unaccompanied children were apprehended at the U.S./México border in fiscal year 2014. But without the interest and concern, many Americans will not listen and learn from their stories, and the opportunities to learn about the migrants will be lost and forgotten. The intent in publishing their stories as well as others in this book is to inform, educate, and bring into the foreground the awareness and conscience of who we are as Americans and what we can do or how we can advocate for those who have been "silenced."This book includes the narratives of nine women, three from each of the three countries: El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, who at the time of the interviews were awaiting asylum proceedings. Each story presented herein is a dramatization, an account based on the information they shared with me. The collection of stories is used as a representation of the women's experiences, and thus, provide only a small yet significant window to the multitude array of suffering and tragedy that have impacted each woman and her family. The title, "In the Shadow of the Half Moon," has a twofold reference. 'Half Moon' is a metaphor for the youthfulness of the women, seeking a new life to accomplish their lives' goals, or to fulfill the rest of their lives in a safer space, perhaps, better, if not for themselves, then, for their children. The metaphor also describes the uncertainty of their future in the United States. Upon arriving at the border, the women's emotional states are uplifted, but the realization of having to start all over again in a new world has not yet leveled into a reality. Finally, the moon signifies "in the cover of darkness," which brings to mind the fact that most of the women left their homes for the U.S. in clandestine circumstances, so no one outside their small family circle would suspect their departure. Also, included in this book project, are essays/articles, especially selected, and are based on work I completed in Guatemala beginning in 2012 as a researcher and writer. The inclusion of these stories is intended to add "the other half of the moon" dimension, to provide a wider perspective or context to the migrant women stories. Part 1, Advocating for Rights, Equality, and Self Determination highlights the work of women determine to beat the odds in a patriarchal system. In Part 2, The Radicalization of University Students, includes a detailed description of the process by which university students sought to change the university's philosophy and mission so that it better reflects their views and vision. Part 3, Guatemala's Next Language Challenge, focuses on how Guatemalans view their destiny as a polyglot, an incredibly difficult and complex process, but important for the country and the world.
