Trident a young man awakes in the middle of the night to pains in his stomach of unknown origin, as though his bowels are being pulled toward something. Following the direction of the pain, he is led on to The Sanctuary. A monumental castle built within the confines of a mountain, filled with magic and the few people that are left in the world with the spark. Learning from his headmaster Richard, Trident's abilities grow at an exponential rate as he advances through the ranks at incredible speed, and comes to realize his potential. Along the way he meets his bucktoothed friend Jinx, and a Troll named Erl, who was once a wizard until someone sucker punched him with a spell during a duel. Now he's stuck in a troll's body, slowly taking upon him troll-like tendencies and losing his mind. They only hope? To find the counter spell to return him to his human state before the transformation is complete. One night after classes, Trident and Richard sit under the stars relating their sad stories about their lost families, when a creature attacks from overhead. Like a giant bat with a man's body covered in fur, the Uthrax attacks Richard who fends off the beast while Trident gets away. Sadly, Richard doesn't escape unscathed the inflicted wounds from the creature infect his body with a magical fever that threatens to slowly destroy him from the inside, in a dream world. Now it's up to Trident and Jinx to save Richard. Discovering through clues and informants the whereabouts of the Uthrax, and the man that created it, they must travel the Eastern Mountains where an eternal dark flame spews forth from the earth, the ever present symbol of the darkness of the underworld, and it's Lord.
