Information processing style has been found to impact rates of false memory. However, the underlying mechanisms for this effect have not been identified. Experiment 1 isolated the contributions of information activation from memory monitoring at retrieval. Field dependence led to greater false recognition for DRM lists. In spite of that, the field dependent group did not display greater activation during recall. These results suggest a selective deficit in monitoring for field dependent people. In Experiment 2, participants completed tests which permitted the use of either diagnostic or disqualifying monitoring strategies. Field dependent individuals exhibited overall recollection impairment. Notably, the results indicate that field dependent people do not engage in the same monitoring strategy shifts that field independent people do, but still benefit from more perceptually rich stimuli. Experiment 3 tested the impact of field dependence on reality monitoring. At study, participants viewed or imagined line drawings, then completed tests for either format. Once again, field dependent people were less accurate overall. Moreover, searching memory for imagined items led to enhanced memory accuracy for the field independent group and considerably worse accuracy for the field dependent group. These results suggest that field dependent people do not capitalize on the unique features of internal events, but continue to rely on sensory detail. Collectively, these results indicate that the episodic memory deficits in field dependent people are substantially driven by impoverished use of retrieval monitoring strategies.
