Description

"Inklings: John Wilkins Carter and the Carter's Ink Company is the story of John Carter (1843-1895), a descendant from Thomas Carter, who emigrated from Suffolk, England, in 1635 to the Massachusetts Bay Colony as part of the Great Migration. Thomas was the first minister of the Puritan church in Woburn from 1642. His first-born son, Samuel Carter, also was a minister. Samuel was engaged to help Lancaster recover from the devastating raids and massacre by the Nipmuck Indians during King Philip's War. Successive generations lived in Lancaster before moving to Boston in the 1820s. Timothy Harrington Carter was the first, followed by his brother, Richard Bridge Carter. They established their own families in Boston, which included John Wilkins Carter and his younger brother James Richard Carter. The Carters established successful enterprises in Boston that contributed in important ways to the evolution of New England. The story focuses on John Wilkins Carter and the company he founded: The Carter's Ink Company. The story describes the old New England family and the enterprises they created and operated in New England over a 150-year period. The first enterprise was Timothy Carter's Old Corner Bookstore in downtown Boston. The most well-known business was The Carter's Ink Company, which originated in Boston immediately following the Civil War and prospered until 1976. James Carter's paper businesses in Boston and Nashua are also discussed. A thread running through the story is the New Jerusalem Church (Swedenborgian), which spread to Boston in the early 1800s. The Swedenborgian faith was central in the lives of the Carters. Their religion was not just devotional; it was sociological, forming an ethical framework for each of them that guided how they lived their lives: family, community, and business. This book is meant to memorialize an interesting and important family that was integral to Massachusetts industrialization and commerce. It is based on four years of research in public and private collections in New England and in Suffolk, England. Much of the underlying information has been drawn from public and private collections of New England history and the Carter family. John Wilkins Carter was a Union infantryman during the Civil War in Virginia, and his experiences, heretofore untold, were important to how he lived his life thereafter. The archives of Carter's Ink Company have been carefully examined in order to understand the complex history of John Carter's ink company. The result is a robust story of a New England family of John Wilkins Carter from their English roots through the twentieth century. It is a story about who these Carters were, what they did, and how they lived their lives."--
