An Inaugural Professorial Lecture When the Institute of Education's International Centre for Intercultural Studies (ICIS) was set up in 1979 there were major issues centring on the reduction of discrimination and inequality on its agenda. In this lecture Professor Gundara discusses ways in which issues of equity, knowledge, race and religion are being addressed today, the challenges they pose to the education system, and possible solutions to these challenges. Professor Gundara argues that there are a number of 'brinks' within the field of education, which he views from an intercultural perspective - these include issues of economic globalisation, educational inequity, knowledge centrism, racism and religious intolerance, the inadequacy of current teacher education, and the media. Globalisation, diversity and uniformity are considered in an international context, and the author reviews the problems arising from a lack of intercultural consensus about the use of terms or consistent frameworks for analysis. He argues that there is a positive future for interculturalism if concepts and analyses are developed which draw on the historical and contemporary aspects of diversity to build an inclusive education system.
