Political theory studies how to organize the forces that influence our lives. One of the most controversial and immediate of these forces, is government. What exactly is a government? What is a government? How should it be organised? What happens when it becomes illegal? Government is a topic that has been discussed in many fields for centuries. These are classic questions. But! Theorists are ambitious people. We've expanded our horizons. This course will examine the hows, whys and whats of culture, ecology, race and gender, education, spirituality, spirituality, and almost everything that makes up our political and social experience. This semester's project will be to learn more about the world of political theory. This will include both historical and modern components. The course's first third will be devoted to the philosophy and tradition of political theory. The second third will focus on tensions between basic concepts that have developed from this tradition. Finally, the third will address current issues in politics. This historical background will help us to critically engage the fundamental political issues we face in our lives. I hope we can all learn and discuss the course materials in three distinct, but connected ways. These texts are shaped and derived from history. We will be examining the ways that theorists' work is shaped by their historical context. This will also help us to create new contexts for future scholars and political professionals. These texts also contain provocative and challenging arguments that often tell us how to live. If we are to understand and respond to their (perhaps presumptuous), claims, then it is essential that we can understand and address them. These texts can often be beautiful in their own unique and funny ways. Political theory is fascinating to me for its history and arguments. However, I also love the textual style, which can be charming and strange. Soon, we'll be discussing the threefold attention to beauty, argument, history. POLITICAL THEORY: SCOPE We are now ready for the study of political theory. The term theory refers to a system of knowledge. The term 'political theories' refers to a systematic knowledge about political phenomena. What kind of knowledge are we looking for about political phenomena within the realm of political theories?
