Jacob Savage was a member of a slave family that escaped from a Mississippi plantation before the beginning of the United States Civil War and escaped to Western Canada with the help of the underground railroad where he and his brothers and sister were raised just north of the Montana border of the United States and south of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Range.
