Oil! In 1859 Edwin L. Drake drilled & struck it at Titusville in the Oil Creek Valley of Pennsylvania, & an industry was born. From a lumbering village of 500, Titusville at once became a magnet for land & petroleum speculators. The following year an English-born photographer, John A. Mather, arrived to make his fortune. His oil speculations never panned out, but photographs from negatives he selected in 1910 from his personal archive are the basis of a unique collection at Drake Well Museum which documents not only the birth of the oil industry but the social history of the late 19th century. Sixty images chosen from 2800 existing collodion & copy negatives & from additional original albumen prints are presented full-frame with annotation. Subjects include scenes of leases & oilmen, streetscapes & bridges, homes & hotels, individual & group portraits, transportation & businesses. Introductory material includes a biography reflecting new research on Mather's life, critical notes on his work as art & as history, oil region map. Indexed. Bibliography. 11 X 17 glossy format.
