Life and history of Joao Silveira Mattos (1833-1866) or John Silva Matts as he became known, who was typical of the Azorean whalers who made their way into the South Pacific. He was born on the tine Island of Sao Jorge (Saint George) the son of an impoverished farming family. He joined his first whaler in Azores in 1855. Eight years later he settled into a quiet family life in Sydney, Australia. He was married to Jane Stevens from the London suburb of Notting Hill in 1863. He died at his Redfern home.
