A much reduced number of individuals still go to remote and inhospitable places as missionaries, but in most emergent countries religious institutions have been indigenised. In many British families, the fact that a great-grandfather was a missionary is now regarded as a quaint footnote of history, with no resonance in contemporary life. Some families have quaint curios: sometimes put on display, but often secreted in the attic; and the recent campaign against ivory trading has made many such survivals a matter of embarrassment even when the ivory was harvested at a time when elephants were abundant. In this story, DI June McDonald is confronted by the contemporary consequences of the survivals from a long-forgotten colonial bishopric, which cause a brutal intrusion into the quiet suburban life of a respected family solicitor.
