Through the near half-century of Communist party rule in central Europe the Roma people, otherwise known as Gypsies or Zigani, were able largely to stay outside the control of the state. A small percentage were forced through conventional higher education, though most of these were uneasily located between two entirely disparate cultures. Even in the most extreme periods of repression, such as happened in Czechoslovakia after 1969, the Roma were able to pass through the 'iron curtain' on illicit trading missions. Hugely despised by the majority populations as being dirty and a-social, the Zigani were nevertheless indispensable as musicians in thousands of catering establishments and for major private parties. In their out-of-town settlements they recycled household waste and conducted their lives according to their own codes and customs. The return to democracy has not significantly changed the lives of the vast majority of the Roma people; though some have settled in western EU countries to the disgust of many of their neighbours. They remain largely a closed society in whom 'civilised' citizens take little interest. Romantic tales, however, circulate about 'Gypsy Barons' and an ordered social structure behind the apparent chaos of the Romany lifestyle. This strand of European recognition had its epitome in the operetta The Gypsy Baron, and it is a recurrent theme in fiction. In this story the clash of cultures between modern Britain and central European Roma is exposed by DI June McDonald, who solves the case, but not quite quickly enough.
