Another heroine story from veteran author Melody Curtiss, with sincerely flawed and finely drawn characters to simultaneously love and hate. The Book of Origin series is darker than the writer's Magic of Lo trilogy for young people, and less reality-based and political motivated than her post-apocalyptic Revolution novels. This time, the author presents her protagonists against the backdrop of teenage angst, the secret miracles of science, and the dark underbelly of mythology. Kadmon opens as a typical "coming of age" story of a quirky, but normal teen that slips into a more shaded premise of mental illness, predatory beings and uncertain realities with the introduction of a second Point of View character. Our heroine, Eve O'Shea, is eagerly anticipating graduation and the end to popularity contests, in-crowd cliques and mean girl antics. She knows she isn't the first person to feel awkward, unpopular and out-of-place at Eastside High, but it's different for her. Eve isn't just losing the popularity contest; she is cursed to fail by an excess of weird in her life. Her mother sells dragon's blood and tarot cards, the Goth kids think she's a witch, and her best friend thinks he might be Satan. Then her sister gets kicked out of school for blowing up the science lab, a guy shows up at their house claiming to be a long lost relative and her mom invites him to move in. Everybody is keeping secrets. What's worse, as Eve looks for answers, her quirky, odd family begins to seem inexplicably alien and deadly.
