In Octobet 1951, San Francisco Police Department Senior Detective Tony Ramirez and his partner, Detective Paul Christian, are assigned a murder case that becomes a series of six brutal killings. The detectives find and arrest an overgrown child of a man named Herbie who had been living with his mother. Herbie dies while awaiting trial in San Francisco's County Jail. Paul appears satisfied that justice has been done. Still, his demeanor turns sullen. When Tony threatens to find another partner, Paul turns in his service revolver and badge. Private eye Paul Christian is cynical, awash in gin, diminished by self-loathing. When a client's husband is murdered, he vows to find the person responsible. Through the fog of too much alcohol and more than enough suspects, he eventually makes good on his promise, gets off the bottle, and learns about friendship and love. Along the way, he finds Karen, himself, and God.
