KNOCKING THE NEIGHBORS. (1913). George Ade. ***.George Ade (1866-1944) was a popular newspaperman and humorist around the turn of the century. He was a prolific writer, but his lasting books were essentially collections of his "fables." This collection lampoons the foibles and pretensions of his Midwest neighbors - everyday people who are shot down cleverly by Mr. Ade. Many of these pieces start out with "Once upon a time," and, often end up with a terse moral at the end - as you would expect from a fable. What kept running through my mind as I was reading them was the voice of Edward Everett Norton from "The Fractured Fairy Tales" that were featured on the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. It would be a fitting background for a recorded version of this book.
