A procedure has been developed to estimate speedily and accurately the labour and material inputs for dwellings of differing physical form, materials and method of construction. The structured basis assists builders and designers to evaluate alternative designs and enables materials manufacturers and planners to assess future production requirements and resource needs more accurately. The procedure has been embodied in a suite of microcomputer programs called DWELLMOD. In these, a dwelling is defined in terms of elements and sub-elements, the resource content of which is quantified by coefficients derived from site-based measurements of the labour and materials inputs required for particular jobs. This report tabulates some labour input coefficients for activities and material input coefficients for some single family houses and low and high-rise flats, using different construction techniques. The values are from on-site studies and are representative of good building practice. The studies were not based on a broad structured sample of buildings and for that reason the values should not be regarded as fully definitive. They are however adequate for users to make exploratory estimates of project resource needs. Builders and planners are recommended to supplement and modify the coefficients to achieve a correspondence with their own methods of construction and levels of productivity.
