I am approaching 70 years of age. Over the last few years I have noticed whenever I relate memories of childhood, people often say that I should write them down. Strange to think that my youth is now part of social history !The more I considered this idea, the more the memories came tumbling back. I started jotting things down. Anecdotes, incidents, events and, of course, the people at the heart of everything. My Dad, Henry 'Harry' Garner, was the Headmaster of Lambourne County Primary School in the village of Abridge in Essex for 22 years, from 1954 until 1976 when he retired at the age of 65.Adjacent to the Victorian school building was 'School House'. It had been the home of previous Headteachers since the school was built in 1842. When our family, Dad, Mam and three young daughters arrived at 'School House' in 1954, I was 5 years old and the eldest child. My middle sister was 3 and my youngest sister was only 16 months old. This was to be our home for the rest of our childhood. For my parents, it would remain home until 1976.This is the story of my childhood, living in 'School House', being a pupil at Lambourne County Primary School and a resident of the village of Abridge.Writing something very personal, like this memoir, is rather different from writing a factual account or a novel. I found that immediately I began writing from past memories that I did not write things down in a chronological manner. Thoughts poured out and led to other thoughts around the same subject. The text is therefore more a 'stream of consciousness' than a structured story. Memories may be incomplete, even inaccurate, but I have tried to stick to what I remember as reality ! After all, I'm writing about events that took place over 50 and 60 years ago !
