Benjamin L. D'Ooge came from a Huguenot family who emigrated from the Netherlands to the United States around 1851 and had settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His parents were the teacher Leonard D'Ooge and Johanna D'Ooge, née Quintus his older brother was the philologist Martin Luther D'Ooge (1839-1915). D'Ooge studied classical philology and physics at the University of Michigan from 1877 to 1881 and was principal of the high school in Coldwater, Michigan from 1881 to 1883 after completing his BA (A.B.).In 1883 he moved to the University of Michigan as a Latin instructor, where he earned a Master's degree (AM) in 1884. His research focused on Latin, which he complemented by studying other Indo-European languages. In 1886, he became appointed professor of Latin and chair of the Department of Classics at the Michigan State Normal School, which was renamed State Normal College in 1899. There he spent his entire career.
