When a rural community college develops a customized GYOL program, it establishes a leadership learning community that allows practical experiences to enhance individual and collective growth and development. This dissertation examines and presents the leadership competencies and skills developed by program participants in a rural community college GYOL institute. The study group included a purposive sample of four faculty and four administrator four years after completion from a rural community college leadership program. The conceptual framework for this study was based upon the AACC leadership competencies and leadership development strategies of situated learning, professional development and succession planning. Findings of this qualitative case study indicate rural community college internal leadership, also known as grow you own leadership (GYOL), program completers developed leadership skills and competencies consistent with competencies outlined by the AACC and were supported through the leadership development strategies of situated learning, professional development and succession planning. The conclusions drawn from this study were the return on investment in terms of professional development and contributions of the program participants to the community college over time. Consequently, a GYOL program is a worthwhile investment for a rural community college that chooses to address succession planning to respond to the local needs and changing times.
