The book reports on research concerning adult outcomes of childhood learning disabilities (LD). The first part of the study followed 203 Canadian LD children up to the mean age of 18 years. Data included structured interviews, questionnaires, and school records. The second phase continued the follow-up to a median age of 25 years and involved reassessment of neurological and neuropsychological status. Subjects were separated by the degree of definite or probable presence of neurological impairment. Results of the first phase indicated that the presence of neurological impairment was related to poorer achievement and adjustment. Subjects with signs of minimal brain dysfunction showed poorer outcomes than LD subjects without such signs. At reevaluation 6.5 years later, the presence of neurological findings or signs of minimal brain dysfunction continued to be related to poorer outcomes. There was no evidence of such signs disappearing as a function of maturation. On reexamination, both "hard signs" and "soft signs" of neurological impairment or minimal brain dysfunction persisted or appeared for the first time in some LD subjects without such findings on intake. Neurological findings in the sensory and speech domain showed a particularly high degree of persistence. The appendixes include a list of tests and measurements, interview schedules, and the neurological examination. Extensive references and an index are provided. (DB)
