Many relatives are not true alcoholics, but they do plenty of social drinking because they belong to a society where social drinking is accepted as a matter of tradition, culture, and even upbringing. More than 25 years ago, I was engaged to be married to a very nice Army officer who was charming, cultured, good-looking, and he had everything going for him. And then when we were talking together, he just admitted that he had this little problem. He indulged in social drinking with the rest of his friends, because he had to do it every evening in the mess. And it could lead to alcoholism, but as long as we got married and I was there to steady him, he could get this habit under control.
