Led by Detective Chief Inspector Miriam Emerson, West Mercia CID is called to a remote, abandoned farmhouse in rural England where the body of a murder victim has been discovered. When Emerson arrives at the scene, she becomes very alarmed: the gruesome, ritualistic Mode Operandi of the perpetrator is identical to that used in two other murders she has investigated. The problem is that these crimes took place almost 200 miles away and 17 years previously; furthermore, neither the killer, who at the time was dubbed 'The Demon' by the investigating officers, nor his victims were ever identified… The Senior Investigating Officer in those earlier cases was DCI Montgomery Stipe of Thames Valley CID. Now within weeks of retirement and carrying the heavy burden of his own personal problems, Stipe is called upon by Emerson to confirm her fears – that this is indeed the work of the same perpetrator. With his failure to apprehend 'The Demon' the first time around being the only blot on an otherwise illustrious police career, Stipe agrees to help Emerson investigate this latest murder. This time, however, the pair has a lot more help: modern forensic science, DNA testing and advanced computer technology. As the investigation progresses, it soon becomes apparent that there is a link between all three victims; it is a link that reaches back into the mists of time to a terrible crime that took place on another continent and amongst a very different race of people… It also becomes obvious that the investigation team itself may be facing real danger, as each unearthed clue, each vital discovery points more and more to a conspiracy at the highest levels of the very establishment Stipe and Emerson represent. An establishment determined to protect itself at almost any cost…
