"Title and Cover Book Title: Lula Mae Blocton Subtitle: African American Experience Through Color and Pattern Describe the book: This book is about painter Lula Mae Blocton known for her vibrant abstractions with classical African themes. In addition to 150 color reproductions of her oeuvre it opens with an essay by the artist narrating her life and origins as well as her work as painter and social activist. A second essay by art historian Barbara Stehle masterfully places Blocton's work in perspective and within the rich environment of the New York art-world and concurrent social resistance. Dr. Barbara Stehle is an art historian and independent curator. She is the founder of Art Intelligentsia and teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design. Born in 1947, Lula Mae Blocton matured artistically just as Abstract Expressionism was losing force. While a number of younger painters turned to Pop Art or realism, Blocton was drawn to works of rigorous geometry and a meticulous examination of color harmony and variations. Her earlier works apply an immaculate technique to complex patterns, including the use of transparent and semi- transparent shapes to study the effects of light on color. Her art has been marked by a love of formality, precision and abstraction but the other pole of her life has been an equally strong concern for human dignity and civil rights. Her move to New York City brought her to the epicenter of movements for African American, gay, and feminist rights. Blocton took an active part in all three and gradually, imagery, especially from her African heritage, began to appear in her art, without, however, altering her commitment to abstraction. She drew inspiration from African Kente cloth. Simple in themselves, the individual design units in Kente create complex overall patterns. Blocton recognized them as a parallel and precursor of her own explorations. Blocton has also inserted historic references in her work, most notable, images of captives taken from slave ship diagrams. Her monumental, multi-panel works in this vein incorporate images of the Amistad, the ship that saw one of the few completely successful slave-rebellions. They are modulated with powerful color provoking a respectful emotional response to tragedy. Lula Mae Blocton, An African American Experience: Through Color and Pattern includes over 100 color plates plus a critical appreciation by Barbara Stehle"--
