A Latin translation of a 1936 French original--a young man decides, out of playful curiosity, to put to the test the effectiveness of an ancient handbook of magic discovered in his Egyptologist friend's house. The book describes how to call upon Anubis in person. The experiment is a success but the Egyptologist, a man of science, refuses to believe it without proof. He thus proposes that his friend put to Anubis a question that science has not been able yet to answer, about a series of satirical drawings of astonishing scenes of animals behaving like human beings: dogs attacking a town of cats; cats serving a queen-mouse, or hunting, or playing music. Anubis' answer involves his disciple (and the reader) in a formidable adventure -- into the heart of old Egypt, its gods and its legends -- whose account and surprising consequences disturb the Egyptologist's rationalism.
