This retrospective qualitative study explored the experiences of eight women in dysfunctional marriages who participated in a self-selected combination of counseling, support groups and self-help tools. Their spouses were, by and large, uninvolved in these activities. In-depth interviews were conducted and analyzed using phenomenological and hermeneutic methodology. the backgrounds and support resources of all participants were different, yet all came to similar conclusions summarized as follows: (a) change must be self-focused, (b) past efforts to change their spouses were ineffective, and resulted in more negative than positive change, and (c) their well-being must not be dependent upon the actions (or inaction) of their spouses. These conclusions resulted in a shift of focus in all of these women. They began exploring their own contribution to marital discord and changing their individual behavior. Anger and blame gradually subsided and improvement in marital satisfaction was reported in all marriages following these changes. These findings have implications for individual therapy where the primary presenting issue is marital/relationship dissatisfaction.
