Tobin Brock, a 30-year-old farmer, is crushed when his wife, Patti Ann, divorces him. She leaves because she does not want children and desires a career in the city though she was raised on a farm. Tobin is left depressed and alone in a big house in the country. He feels negatively toward all women until he meets 24-year-old Anita Longstreet, who is a cattle farmer 25 miles from him. Their attraction to each other is positively explosive, though it cools when Anita doubts she can hold his love and be a master farmer at the same time. Tobin leaves her with no intent of returning. Much later, Anita invites him to come back and talk about getting back together. Their road to maturity is interesting and complex, and shows that two people can really love and find the long-range ability to get along happily together.
