He is called upon to help survey the first Federal Road.His assignments involve him in the Creek Indian War, being assigned at Fort Mims where the Massacre took place.Jade leads the reconnaissance element that gathers information for General Andrew Jackson's famous attack at Horseshoe Bend. He is present at Fort Jackson when William Weatherford surrenders. Leaving the army, he leads a wagon train to the Alabama Territory, establishes a town at McGill's Hill. He becomes a successful plantation cotton farmer, eventually marrying Selena. He leads seventeen families to McGill Hill, and establishes the oldest Presbyterian Church in Alabama. The book's unusual ending keeps the reader in suspense until the last page.
