Description

Mission VII BC 26 is a true World War II account, telling of the story of the B-17F bomber with tail number 41-24489, dubbed "Terry and the Pirates", and its crew, shot down over France on 20 December 1942 by Luftwaffe fighters. Three of the ten member crew died. The narrative tells of fates of the seven survivors detained in Nazi prisoner of war camps. Attached to the 306th Bombing Group, 367th Bombing Squadron (Clay Pigeons), the mission targeted the Luftwaffe air depot at Romilly-sur-Seine. The tremendously high losses experienced by the Eight Air Force flying out of Thurleigh, U.K. in late 1942, was the stuff of Hollywood movies and soon led to the events as portrayed in the movie "Twelve O'Clock High". But these were true blood and guts heroes, and their story should be told.
