Description

Geoffrey Johnston is a retired Presbyterian minister who served five years in Nigeria and four in Jamaica. For almost twenty years he was on the staff of Presbyterian College, Montreal. He has written extensively on missionary subjects, particularly those relating to the work of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. This book is a case study in a unique form of Christian literature, missionary letters written for public consumption in the church journals. It starts with pre-imperial Vanuatu and charts the course of Canadian Presbyterian missions through the ups and downs of the British, Chinese and Japanese empires and ends with the dawn of the post-imperial period. These are letters written by Canadians for Canadians. They reveal what the missionaries thought the people at home should know and could understand. The last chapter therefore tries to put this unique literature in the context of Canadian church life.
