"On laying down this work, after a careful reading, the reviewer asked himself first: "What special qualities have made themselves noticeable?" The answer to this question was: "Clearness and simplicity." The author has not made use of that which he terms "technical jargon." This does not mean that he has attempted to write in words of one syllable. The book is more than an attempt. It is an accomplishment. To quote from the chapter on Speculation, the author is evidently one of those who "spend their time and use their brains in doing something about which they know a great deal." This book can be described almost in the way in which an account is defined in Chapter VII: "A story that begins at the beginning and tells everything that happened in the order in which it occurred." Everything about money, indeed, is not told. If the object had been to do so, the book would then have been an attempt, and an unsuccessful one, but the work has been on broader lines. It is a short story with Money as the principal character. Beginning with the remote ages when money was unknown in any form, its origin and development have been followed down the centuries to the present day. On points of real importance, the explanations have been full and to the point. Mr. Hayward can be congratulated on the fact that he has taken a subject which has been discussed almost without limit, and has produced a work of freshness, interest and utility. -Greater Efficiency: The Journal of Efficiency Society, Inc., Volume 6 [1917]
