It is August 1815. After an absence of 6 years, Emma Simmons has returned to the country of her birth. She eloped with an officer when she was fifteen and consequently was disowned by her parents. However, she has married again and is now a widow. Emma goes riding the first morning she is home and comes face to face with Colonel Genestes who she believed had died at Hougoumont Farm. Emma's parents allow her to take her sister to a modiste in Portsmouth where Catherine is measured for a number of gowns As they leave the shop Catherine crashes into Edward, the Earl of Warrender and drops her reticule which he picks up. Catherine dazzles everyone at the Countess's ball and as expected, no-one pays any attention to Emma, apart from the Earl of Lancaster who recognises her from the Duchess of Richmond's Ball on 15 June. The Earl of Warrender is also attending although he becomes seriously ill - remnants of a fever caught in the Peninsular. Edward's father has made some provisos in his Will that mean that if he doesn't marry before the end of the Season; the estate will fall to his nephew, with his brother-in-law acting on his behalf, however Christopher is a gambler and a wastrel and Warrender would be ruined if it was to fall into his hands. Unfortunately Edward despises most of the women he sees at these social events, and he has fallen in love with a pair of grey eyes he first saw after the events of the Battle of Waterloo. Will Edward and Emma find one another? What of the provisos in the Will? Can they make future together?
