Finally convinced, the authorities permitted him to leave while the search for the Alistairs continued. Sailing south, visiting island after island, Cuss once again ran into the wanted couple, this time in Key Largo where a broker in stolen gems was found murdered, and a young woman with a bag of diamonds asked to crew on his boat. Wanting to continue on his way, but being a Private Investigator, Cuss became involved with the murder, the police, the girl, and the search for the Alistairs. Unable to trail them into Cuba, he left the Alisters to the authorities. However, with the missing diamonds believed to be hidden away on his boat, Cuss and the Millie Dee become the targets of the authorities, the thieves, and the jewel brokers, as he cruises to theVirgin Islands.
